Description
HAWKWIND - Hawkwind, Dave Brock & Related FLAC
This may seem a bit of a weird oddball Hawkwind related collection, but then again maybe this sort of collection suits Hawkwind and their fans. I tried not to duplicate any torrents already on KAT unless it was a lesser source such as MP3 then I went ahead. I listed these CDs by year released and there are four compilations here that I put together that are at the bottom of the list. All these albums I ripped directly from CD except for Spaced Out In London which was something I acquired online years ago and I don’t know the source except to say it sounds pretty good to me. A couple of these official live concerts veer towards bootleg quality with Winter Solstice 2005 being the least good sounding. Overall I think a Hawkwind fan should find something of interest here. If you like this collection, and feel that others may like it, then feel free to seed as much as possible and help keep this torrent alive. Thanks, Mike.
1974 ROBERT CALVERT Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters 1CD
Bob Calvert's first, and best, solo album, Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters was released in 1974 to positive reviews from the music press. The theme of the album is the disastrous safety record of the Lockheed F104G Starfighter purchased by the West German airforce. It is mostly dialogue with a handful of songs along the way, and functions as a piece of very black humour.
1980 ARTHUR BROWN VINCENT CRANE Faster Than the Speed of Light 1CD
One of the great overlooked albums, Faster Than the Speed of Light was the result of a collaboration between legendary Crazy World & Kingdom Come visionary Arthur Brown and his former Crazy World colleague (and Atomic Rooster leader) Vincent Crane. The resulting record was a unique fusion of Browns amazing vocals and eccentric musical visions and Crane’s innovative keyboard playing and arrangement ideas.
1995 HAWKWIND TRIBUTE Assassins of Silence / Hundred-Watt Violence 1CD
There are two distinct threads to this CD. Some of the acts on it come across as garage bands, trying to faithfully replicate the original tracks to the best of their ability. Others try to do something new with the material, with generally better results... Even where some individual tracks on this CD are not particularly successful, this is still a good album for the committed Hawkfan. It shows up the punky / thrashy potential of Hawkwind's music, and in the hands of talented musicians, some of these songs are taken in a completely new direction.
2001 DAVE BROCK Memos and Demos 1CD
One of the best solo albums by any Hawkwind member, and definitely the Captain's best alongside Strange Trips and Pipe Dreams...Verdict: essential for all Hawkwind completists, obsessive-compulsives, blinkered, mad and/or quite normal people.
2002 HAWKWIND Canterbury Fayre 2001 2CD
This live album contains many of Hawkwind's best ever songs including four from Levitation. As a power-trio the band sound very tight and professional. On the song Silver Machine we even get to hear Arthur Brown on vocals, which is very nice. Some instrumental passages are brutal and heavy and there are lots of guitar solos. They have a unique sound, even after all of these years, and with the space rock in full flow there is no-one to touch them.
2002 HAWKWIND Live 1990 2CD
Live 1990 is a 2002 live album release of two 1990 concerts by Hawkwind. The first concert, making up CD1 and the first three tracks from CD2, was recorded on their winter 1990 tour. The remainder is composed of the soundtrack to the filmed concert performance which is available on the Nottingham video.
2003 HAWKWIND TRIBUTE Daze of the Underground 2CD
Daze of the Underground differs from earlier tributes by dint of having some name Space Rock acts on it, including people who are current or ex-members of Hawkwind. So the initial reaction is that this is a higher-budget exercise than Assassins of Silence / Hundred Watt Violence. The acts on Daze of The Underground are Space Rockers and in most cases this seems to be driven by wanting to acknowledge a debt to Hawkwind and their music.
2004 HAWKWIND Spaced Out In London 1CD
Spaced Out in London is a 2004 live album by Hawkwind of a 2002 gig.
Recorded at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London, 13 December 2002
I would just like to point out that this is the only album here where I don’t have the original CD, as it’s hard to find, so it was gotten online at some point. It sounds pretty good to me so I wanted to make it available to those who haven’t heard it as it’s certainly worth a listen.
2004 SPACE RITUAL Live At the Venusian Electric Ballroom In the Cygnus 5 Galaxy 1CD
The ultimate Hawkwind tribute band - well most most of them did play in the band in the early seventies - goes through old Hawkwind and Nik Turner numbers reminding us all what a Hawkwind gig used to sound like. Brilliant!
2006 ALAN DAVEY Captured Rotation 1CD
This is pretty much a quintessential space rock album, with 9/12 being instrumental songs. Ron Tree, another Hawkwind alumni, provides vocals on three tracks. Whereas Hawkwind always has a slight tongue-in-cheek quality, this album is deadly serious. The music alternates from big riffing grinding rocking numbers to ethereal deep space ambient, all heavy, brooding, and dark.
2007 ASTRALASIA the Hawkwind Re-Mixes 1CD
Astralasia originally sprang from another british psychedelic space rock band the Magic Mushroom Band So who Better to Be Let Loose on Some of Hawkwind's Finest Moments. While Some of These Remixes have Been Available Before this is the First Time that all the Work Has Been Collected Together on One CD and the Album also includes a Previously Unreleased Versions of "Uncle Sam's on Mars" and an Early Version of "Spirit of the Age".
2007 SPACE RITUAL Other World 1CD
2007 debut studio album by a group composed (as some might suspect) of former members of Hawkwind: Nik Turner, Terry Ollis, Dave Anderson, Thomas Crimble and Mick Slattery. Space Ritual arises like a phoenix from Hawkwind's ashes with this stunning album of original material that takes the ground-breaking music into a new dimension that is both contemporary but keenly aware of its heritage and roots. The lyrics feature poems penned by Sci-fi author Michael Moorcock.
2008 HAWKWIND Minneapolis 1989 2CD
The set list follows much of what the band was performing during the late '80s and early '90s and includes decent performances of "Magnu," "Brainbox," "Hassan I Sahbah," and "Damnation Alley." The medley pieces, such as "Assault and Battery/The Golden Void" and the "Back in the Box" suite (which includes a detour into "Arrival in Utopia"), sound genuinely inspired. There are 15 tracks in all, spread over two discs, and the best surprise is saved for last as "Ejection" mutates into two very long surprise jams.
2008 HAWKWIND Reading 1992 2CD
The lineup is the classic three-piece of the 1990s with Dave Brock, Alan Davey, and Richard Chadwick holding down the fort. The material features much classic material, and some rather obscure moments as well. The version of "Space Dust" is quite good, as is the closing "Masters of the Universe," and the long reading of "Hassan I Sabah."
2008 HAWKWIND Treworgey 1989 (Actually Bristol University 1993) 2CD
This CD was a bit of a goof as it’s not really Treworgey 1989 but a show from Bristol 1993. I’m including the artwork but its track listing has different songs from the songs found within. It’s confusing but this is what you would have got if you had purchased the CD. I’m leaving it as is and you can do what you want with it…a little more info below…
Instead of Tregowney you get a live recording previously unreleased with a completely different track listing. According to the blogs and the CD text it originates from a soundboard recording of the Business Trip tour 1993 recorded at Bristol University! It's pretty damn fine to, if you can forgive the odd missing track, tracks suddenly coming to the end ("The Right stuff") or being faded out "Right to decide". You get superior versions of "LSD" and "Assassins of Allah" and even "Quark" sounds great here. Dave's guitar is at the front unusually and if you ignore the limited source the sound quality is of a very good bootleg. It is much better generally than most of the Hawkwind voiceprint archive releases.
2008 HAWKWIND Winter Solstice 2005 2CD
Here we go again. Another mess up on a Hawkwind release we get "Sword of the east" twice, track list is suspect/incomplete, breaks in tracks illogical, sleeve doesn't match, stuff listed as being on disc 1 is on disc 2. I know everyone makes mistakes but Hawkwind suffer more than most! At least it has been released, the sound quality is adequate for a 'not intended for general release' album, this is an archival release of decent bootleg quality.
2008 PRE-MED the Truth About Us 1CD
Pre-Med is a space rock band that formed in 2004 by Danny Faulkner and Hawkwind’s bassist Alan Davey. The Truth About Us is jam packed with lush swirling synths, hypnotic instrumentals, and classic Hawkwind-like ballads that remind of Hawkwind’s Warrior at the Edge of Time. In fact, Pre-Med includes a cover of Dave Brock’s eerie “The Demented Man†from that same album, breathing new life and energy into the song. In fact, the whole disc is a melodic version of this classic space rock band.
2008 ROBERT CALVERT A Memorial Concert 1CD
ROBERT CALVERT A MEMORIAL CONCERT
SUNDAY 28 SEPT 2008 KINGS HALL, HERNE BAY
Nik Turner, Adrian Shaw, Harvey Bainbridge, Steve Swindells, Ron Tree, Alan Davey, Jerry Richards, Commander Jim Hawkins, Martin Griffin, Jack Griffin
2009 ALAN DAVEY Eclectic Devils 1CD
Building slowly from the ambient beginnings of Angel Dawn, this is, for the most part, a collection of driving, swirly rock that Hawkfans will no doubt embrace. The eclecticism of the title is there on tracks such as Strung Out, which blends Eastern-style phasing with some deft fretwork, and in the experimental soundscapes of Alien Veto. On others though, such as Too High, the straight rock riffing is too dated to commend. Davey’s trademark heavy basslines are, however,in evidence everywhere, and that’s enough to carry the weaker material.
2009 HAWKWIND Collector Series Vol 2 Live 1982 2CD
Choose Your Masques: Collectors Series Volume 2 is a live album release of most of a pair of 1982 concerts by Hawkwind. Recorded mostly 12th November of the winter 1982 tour, with some tracks possibly from 13th November, at London's Hammersmith Odeon, featuring a guest slot from Michael Moorcock on 12th November.
2010 HAWKWIND TRIBUTE Hawkwind Triad (Harvestman, Minsk, US Christmas) 1CD
The Hawkwind Triad album is a fitting tribute to the British band that somehow seems to be simultaneously unheard by the majority of the world's Rock listeners, while also one of the most influential Psychedelic bands of all time. The Triad is unique, as it is a set of covers by three separate artists that essentially flows like an album. Each band--Harvestman (Steve Von Till of Neurosis's Psych project), Minsk, and U.S. Christmas--approaches these 11 iconic songs with respect, and reinterprets them in a new space and time. This full-length Psychedelic feast not only captures the feel of Hawkwind's individual songs, but also that of their classic albums.
2011 DAVE BROCK Strange Trips and Pipe Dreams 1CD
There are some of Brock's most listenable songs on this, overall a strong album by him. Fans of Hawkwind won't be disappointed. From a semi-unplugged version of 'space' to an ambiant 'encounters'; classic Hawwindish 'you burn me up' and 'white zone' to an atmospheric 'U.F.O. line'; there is a good compilation of space rock here.
2011 HAWKWIND Parallel Universe 3CD
'Parallel Universe' is a significant release that as well as containing a good cross-section of the band's output over the first five years, (the band was actually formed in 1969), pulls together a slew of material that's previously been available as Bonus Tracks on the EMI remasters from a few years back, plus a selection of Previously Unreleased United Artists - era tracks including studio versions of: 'It's So Easy' and 'You'd Better Believe It', a very different studio cut of 'Wind Of Change', alternative vocals on a studio recording of 'Seven By Seven' and new songs: 'Hog Farm' and what's listed as being a previously unreleased track: 'Take What You Can', which actually appeared on a 'Weird Tapes' release under the title: 'Make What You Can'. This package of great tracks is something that no serious Hawkwind fan or collector should be without. These are the seminal recordings of the band - the essence of what Hawkwind was at that time, and was all about.
2012 DAVE BROCK Looking For Love in the Lost Land Of Dreams 1CD
OK then, so this is a typical Dave Brock solo album in many respects - the sounds
are what we know (guitar, organ, synth, drum programming), and there's a degree of reuse of previously deployed lyrics, riffs and sounds. And yet it's not familiar at all, because his songwriting, arrangements and production just get weirder and weirder. This is really a deeply unconventional album, with some shortcomings here and there. But it does succeed in its'
remit of attaining "...those magic moments that one tries to achieve." There are plenty of these scattered throughout, so one must say "Jolly good!â€
2012 HAWKLORDS We Are One 1CD
The Hawklord's of 2012 consist of two of the 1970s lineup of Hawklords (Bainbridge and Swindells) and various ex-members of Hawkwind. The album is a natural successor to the original Hawklord's album in that it combines the punky spirit with space rock and a touch of prog. The lyrics are occasionally a bit dubious, but the music is fantastic with plenty of layers of synths and samples to keep things interesting. I particularly liked 'Shut Up', which features samples, chugging guitar and synth sounds. Event Horizon, at 8 minutes, is the longest track and quite Floydian in nature.
2012 LASTWIND Return of a Sonic Assassin 1CD
Lastwind is another spinoff from the legendary sixty’s psychedelic band Hawkwind. Forming originally in 2006 by Paul Hayles (formally a member of Hawkwind and Sonic Assassins) the band successfully toured with Hawkwind before the band had to be put on the back boiler for various reasons until recently. Overall with “Return of a Sonic Assassin†Paul Hayles has proved that he is back doing what he loves best, creating the psychedelic music that he loves. This album will please fans of Hawkwind, and it associated splinter bands, as well as the more adventurous prog fan.
2013 HAWKLORDS Dream 1CD
Following their epic 2012 return to form We Are One, long-running Hawkwind spin-off project Hawklords quickly regrouped for Dream, a more introspective and deeply thought-out album said by the band to be a commentary on the human condition. Rooted less in concept and more in rock-solid playing, exploratory synthesizer workouts, and wailing vocals from frontman Ron Tree, the album begins with the sprawling psychedelic burn of "Dream a Dream" and continues from there, through science fiction imagery, churning riffs, and interstellar jamming, culminating with the pulsing noise rock of "Psychic Eyes."
2013 NIK TURNER Space Gypsy 1CD
Space Gypsy features Turner's vocals, and his trademark saxophones and flutes front a quintet whose sound is drenched in synths, mellotrons, electric guitars, and drums. His vocals are awash in reverb but they ride cleanly just above the instrumental fray. While this music isn't so much prog as cosmic rock, it has enough weirdness in both its production and with the man himself singing of Mayans, space aliens, multidimensional realities, and mystic and occult practices to please most acid travelers. Clocking in at 50 minutes, standout tracks include opener "Fallen Angel STS-51-L," with its crunchy guitar driving through the layered mellotrons and drums, the gently spacy "Galaxy Rise," that contains some lovely flute playing, the space-punk throb of "We Ride the Timewinds," and the forbidding, paranoid closer, "Something's Not Right." This fulfills the prescription
